Accelerated Readers

Look at the readers who have 5 A.R.points this week! Mrs. Irwin is very proud of what great readers you are becoming in second grade! Keep up the great work, I am very proud of all of you!

Adopt-a Grandparent

Here we are working on our letters for the Adopt-A-Grandparent program. The students were given a name of an elderly person who would like to receive letters. We learned the different parts of a letter and how to write one. We also learned how to address an envelope and mail it. Now we are hoping that we will have a good response from our "grandparents".

Clowns!

In celebration of the 100th day of school, clowns from Miles of Smiles came to visit us. The kids had a lot of fun. Look real close and you will see that two of our kids were choosen out of the crowd to participate. What fun!

Reading

In reading, we found a partner and read to them. We then had a chance to work with our buddy to discuss what we had read.

Math

In math, we were learning about symmetry. The students were given a piece of paper and told to fold it in half. I then put paint in the center where the fold was. Look at the great symmetrical pictures they created!

Field Trip to the Rescue Mission

On December 11, we took a trip to the Kokomo Rescue Mission. We had a tour of the facility and got to see first hand how much time and money it takes to keep the place running. We also decorated the cafeteria where we got to experience what it is like to eat there. We also donated four boxes of food to the shelter. We had a great time and learned so much. What a great learning experience!

Christmas program

Wow, we looked great and did a fabulous job singing! We hope you enjoyed the program, and we wish you a Merry Christmas!

Giving Tree!

Thank you for donating to our "Giving Tree". We will be donating 55 hats, 50 pairs of gloves, 30 scarves, and 8 pairs of socks to Kokomo Urban Outreach. It is amazing how much we can do when we all work together. I really appreciate all of your thoughtfulness. I know the person who receives these will be very grateful!

Homelessness

The students are learning about homelessness this week. We are discussing things such as who can become homeless, where the homeless go, how the homeless are fed, the difference of a want and a need, and things we can do to make a difference in a homeless person's life. We will be taking a field trip to the Kokomo Rescue Mission on Thursday to see how the facility operates. The students will be taking a tour, decorating the cafeteria and eating at the shelter. What a great experience!

Shopping!

The kids have been saving their money all year long. They receive money for getting an A+ on their citizenship grades, being good students, or being caught doing something nice. The students were given a choice to buy something for $1dollar,$5 dollars, or save their money for a $40 item. It was very interesting to see who saved their money. Not a lot!

Indian Research

We did research on different Indian tribes. We learned about the Cherokee, Mohawk, Seminole, Pueblo, Sioux and Apache Indians. We had so much fun researching and writing our reports. These are the posters we made and presented to the class. It was a lot of work, but we learned a lot.

Indian Writing!

During social studies we are studying Indians. The kids were given Indian symbols and had to write a story using the pictures.

Robot time!

Our story this week was called Pearl and Wagner. This story was about two characters who build a robot for the science fair. We decided to make a robot for our classroom and make him our class mascot.
